What should you look for in an IT service provider

In the movie the Matrix, it is suggested that we are all part of a computer-generated, virtual world. Whilst this may not be true, what is true is that IT is very important in the modern world, and a business or organization can get left behind if they do not stay up to date with the latest tech. With this in mind, below we suggest a few tips on what you need to look for in an IT service provider.

The quality of their hardware and software

The bottom line is that an IT service provider is only as good as, well, their IT. Whether you run a business or if you are thinking of your own personal needs, there are a number of things that you must consider when you are choosing a service provider. For example, you will want to:

– Write a list of your needs, and consult with your staff. If you need a piece of equipment and the provider doesn’t offer this, they are not for you.

– What kind of hardware do you want?

– What is your budget?

– Choose a shortlist, and then evaluate what they have to offer.

If you do these things, and genuinely reflect on what you are looking for from an IT service provider, then you are more likely to make a choice that fits your businesses needs.

Reputation, reputation, reputation

The reputation of the company is very important, not only as an end in itself, but as an indication of the quality of service that they provide. If they have a good reputation, chance are they provide good tech service.   There are a number of techniques for assessing service providers reputation. For example, you could speak to former employees of the company. We all know there are none as honest as them! Otherwise, you could seek out meetings with those who have provider testimonials, or look at employee’s reviews. This will give you an indication of whether this company is right for you.

Are they right for YOU?

This is incredibly important. Most companies will offer a solid service, but you want one that is right for YOU. This means that they may have experience working with a company just like yours, or they may have expertise that sets them apart from the pack. Another important element of this is trust.

You will want a company who can provide you with solid references and recommendations on their past work, and you will need to trust the company to meet whatever needs your business has. For example, some businesses, financial services being an example, have very particular IT needs, whilst other businesses will produce and manage very sensitive data that it is imperative to protect.

As a result, the relationship with your IT provider is a very important one, and one that must be based on a foundation of trust.

This is obviously not an exhaustive list of steps to take before hiring a IT service provider, but it will prove useful if you are reflecting upon what to look for in a new partner to your company.
