A team at Johns Hopkins University created a drone, UAAV – an unmanned aerial-aquatic vehicle, that can travel underwater and is named a Flying Fish.
Developed over the past two years by robotics researchers the Flying Fish is propelled in the air and under the water by a single motor and propeller. In the air the prop spins quickly, but when it dives below the water surface, it slows down. It speeds up again as the vehicle is about to return to the air. The Flying Fish could fly autonomously at 48 km/h to a land to the water, dive in to collect environmental data, then fly back to its base. The Flying Fish can be seen in action, in the video below.
